How to use the Alberta permit hub
This Alberta directory currently links to 10 local permit guides, including Airdrie, Calgary and Edmonton. Start with the municipality or authority for the property rather than relying on a rule from a nearby city. A project can involve separate zoning, building, development, trade or servicing questions, and the office that handles one step may not handle every approval.
Across Alberta, permit routing can differ by municipality and project type; a building question, a land-use question and a trade-safety question may not all be handled in the same place. Before assuming work is exempt, write down the project scope, dimensions, structural changes, new plumbing or electrical work, any change of use and whether new dwelling space is involved. Those facts make the official permit search much more reliable. If your location is not listed here, use the current municipal or delegated authority directly instead of borrowing another city's threshold.

How residential permits are routed in Alberta
Alberta uses the Safety Codes Act system. Building, electrical, gas, plumbing and private-sewage permits can be delivered by accredited municipalities or by agencies serving non-accredited areas. Municipal land-use/development approval is a separate question from safety-code permits.
Code layer: The current provincial building baseline is the National Building Code – 2023 Alberta Edition, second printing, published August 17, 2026.
Trade permits: Do not assume every trade permit comes from the same municipal counter. The responsible permit issuer depends on the municipality’s accreditation and service arrangement; the local permit page is the starting point, with Alberta/Safety Codes Council routing used where the municipality does not administer a discipline.
Coverage: HomePermitsCanada currently has 10 municipal guides in Alberta. Use the city page for the project trigger, zoning/development check, municipal department, inspections and official city sources; use the province-level sources below to understand which approvals may sit outside city hall.
